Instagram image sizes and ratios
These are the sizes the resizer uses. Where Meta gives a ratio and a minimum but no exact pixel size, the table says so.
| Where it shows | Ratio | Size in pixels | What Meta says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | Inside the range Instagram keeps at full resolution |
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | Inside the same range |
| Tall portrait post | 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 | The tallest shape Instagram keeps without cropping |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 | The widest shape Instagram keeps without cropping |
| Story or Reel | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | Instagram gives no pixel size for Stories. Reels can be 1.91:1 to 9:16 and at least 720 pixels. 1080 x 1920 is 9:16 at the 1080 pixel post width |
| Reel cover | 1:1.55 | 420 x 654 | Instagram's recommended cover size |
| Feed and Explore home ad | 4:5 | 1440 x 1800 | At least 500 pixels wide; any shape from 4:5 to 1.91:1 is accepted |
| Stories and Reels ad | 9:16 | 1440 x 2560 | At least 500 pixels wide. Keep about 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% at each side free of text and logos |
| Carousel ad card | 4:5 (1:1 if any card is a video) | At least 1080 x 1080 | No exact size is given; the resizer uses 1080 x 1350 |
How Instagram treats what you upload. Instagram stores photos at up to 1080 pixels wide. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution if its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. A wider photo is reduced to 1080 pixels wide, a narrower one is enlarged to 320 pixels wide, and a shape outside that range is cropped to fit. Uploading at exactly 1080 pixels wide, in a supported shape, means Instagram has nothing to resize.
Ads. Every Instagram image ad placement takes JPG or PNG files up to 30 MB, with a 1% aspect ratio tolerance, so an ad image has to be very close to the stated shape. For images in Instagram Feed, Meta mostly recommends 4:5, and in places 1:1 for single-image ads. Both shapes are accepted. For every placement, see our Meta ads specs guide.
How to resize an image for Instagram
- Add your images. Drop up to 10 photos on the tool, choose them with the file picker, or paste one. They are opened in your browser and never uploaded.
- Tick the sizes you need. The Instagram tab lists post, Story, Reel and ad sizes. You can tick several, add sizes from the Facebook tab, or add a custom width and height.
- Choose crop or fit. Crop to fill fills the frame and trims the edges. Fit with padding keeps the whole photo and fills the gap with a color or a blurred copy.
- Set the crop. Drag the preview, or use the arrow keys, to choose what stays in the frame, and zoom in if you want a tighter crop. The position is saved per image and used for every size, so a product that is centered in the 4:5 post is also centered in the 9:16 Story.
- Pick a file type and download. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and a quality level, check the estimated file size, and download one file or all of them in a ZIP. Ten photos in three sizes give you 30 files, named by photo and size.
If a photo is smaller than the size you picked, the tool warns you before you download: enlarging a photo cannot add detail, so it may look soft.
Crop or fit: posting the whole photo without cropping
Most photos are not the shape Instagram wants. A camera photo is usually 3:2 or 4:3, and a 4:5 post or a 9:16 Story is taller than both, so you either trim the photo or add space around it.
Crop to fill
The photo fills the whole frame and the parts that do not fit are cut off. Use it when the subject sits in the middle with room around it, such as a product on a plain background or a model shot with space above the head. It gives the biggest, cleanest image in the feed. Drag the preview to keep the product in frame; the same focus point is used for every size you tick.
Fit with padding
The whole photo is kept and the empty space is filled. This is how you post a full picture without cropping it.
- White suits product photos on a white background, because the padding blends in. Use our white background maker first if the photo has a busy background.
- A brand color works for a consistent grid or a series of ads.
- A blurred copy suits lifestyle and model photos in Stories and Reels: the frame looks full, and the product stays sharp in the middle.
Padding is part of the image, so in a Story or Reel it can sit behind the buttons and captions at the top and bottom of the screen. Check where your text lands with the Instagram Reels safe zone checker.
Is 4:3 or 16:9 better for Instagram?
Both upload without cropping, because both are inside Instagram's 1.91:1 to 3:4 range. But on a phone a taller image takes up more of the screen, so for feed posts a portrait 4:5 or 3:4 shows the product larger than either landscape shape.
File format and quality tips
- JPG for photos. A quality of 85 to 92% is hard to tell from the original and keeps files small. Meta accepts JPG and PNG for image ads, so use one of those for ads.
- PNG for graphics. Use PNG for images with text, logos or flat color, where JPG can leave smudges around sharp edges. PNG files are larger.
- WebP for smaller files elsewhere. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at the same quality and suits websites and shops. Check that the place you upload to accepts it before using it for ads.
- Start from the largest original. Resize from the full-size photo, not from a copy that has already been shrunk or sent through a messaging app. Every save in a lossy format loses a little detail.
- Match the width Instagram uses. For posts, 1080 pixels wide avoids a second resize by Instagram. For ads, Meta recommends the larger 1440 pixel sizes.
- Reels uploads. Instagram has a setting to always upload at the highest quality: open your profile, then the menu, then Media quality, and turn on Upload at highest quality.
The resizer scales down in steps with high-quality smoothing, so fine patterns, fabric texture and small type stay clean instead of turning jagged.
Ad creatives made for each placement with Image Ads
Resizing adapts a photo you already have. Image Ads, part of CamClo AI, makes new ad creatives from your product photos in the shape of the placement you choose: 1:1 square and 4:5 portrait for Instagram and Facebook feeds, 9:16 for Stories and Reels, and 2:3 and 1.9:1 for other placements.
Each creative is composed for its shape rather than cropped from another size. For 9:16, Image Ads keeps important content away from the top and bottom of the frame, where Stories and Reels show their buttons. You pick the goal of the ad, and text on the image is optional.

What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) is the usual choice because it fills more of a phone screen. Square posts are 1080 x 1080, landscape posts 1080 x 566 (1.91:1), and the tallest post Instagram keeps without cropping is 1080 x 1440 (3:4). Instagram stores photos at up to 1080 pixels wide.
How do I resize a photo for Instagram without cropping it?
Choose Fit with padding. The whole photo is kept and scaled to fit the size you pick, and the empty space is filled with white, any color you choose, or a blurred copy of the photo. White suits product photos on white backgrounds; a blurred copy suits lifestyle photos in Stories and Reels.
What size is an Instagram Story or Reel?
Stories and Reels are 9:16. Instagram gives no pixel size for Stories, and Reels can be 1.91:1 to 9:16 with a minimum resolution of 720 pixels, so 1080 x 1920 is the common choice. For Story and Reel ads, Meta recommends 1440 x 2560.
What size is an Instagram ad?
Meta recommends 1440 x 1800 pixels (4:5) for Instagram Feed and Explore home image ads and 1440 x 2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. Carousel cards are 4:5 when every card is an image, at least 1080 pixels. Files can be JPG or PNG up to 30 MB.
Can I resize several images for Instagram at once?
Yes. Add up to 10 images, tick as many sizes as you need, and download everything as one ZIP file. Each image keeps its own crop position, and the files are named by photo and size.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The resizer runs in your browser. Your photos are opened, resized and saved on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server.
