How to use the hook generator

  1. Say what you sell the way a customer would, for example linen shirts or this face serum.
  2. Name who it is for as a group of people: new runners, busy parents, people who run hot.
  3. Write the problem so it fits after "tired of", for example sweaty shirts by noon, and the result so it fits after "how to", for example stay cool all day.
  4. Add how long it takes if it fits your product, such as a week or 30 days. It unlocks the test and challenge hooks.
  5. Filter and copy. Pick a hook type, or turn on Short enough for an image headline to keep only hooks of 40 characters or fewer. Copy one hook, or copy them all as a list.

Your words are highlighted inside each hook, so you can see what to tweak. The hooks are built from templates in your browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the same words always give the same hooks.

12 types of hooks, with examples

Each type stops the scroll in a different way. These examples use the sample words in the tool: linen shirts, for people who run hot, who are tired of sweaty shirts by noon and want to stay cool all day.

How to test hooks in your ads

A hook is only good if it works on your audience, so test several against each other and let the numbers pick.

  1. Change one thing. Keep the same video or image and swap only the opening line, the on-screen text or the headline. If everything changes, you cannot tell what made the difference.
  2. Run three to five hooks at once for the same product and audience, with the same budget and dates.
  3. Judge video hooks on the first seconds. Many advertisers use hook rate: 3-second video plays divided by impressions, both from Ads Manager. A higher hook rate means more people stayed past the opening.
  4. Judge image hooks on clicks. Compare click-through rate with the CTR calculator, then check that the clicks turn into sales with the CPA calculator.
  5. Write the next round from the winner. If a question hook wins, try three new questions before moving to another type.

What makes a hook work

  • It is specific. "Sweaty shirts by noon" stops more people than "feeling uncomfortable", because the viewer pictures it.
  • It speaks to one person. Write as if to a friend, not to a crowd.
  • It matches what is on screen. If the line is about a problem, show the problem in the first second.
  • It sounds natural out loud. Say a video hook before you use it. If you stumble, shorten it.
  • It promises only what the product does. Leave out numbers, results and reviews you cannot back up.
  • It does not guess who the viewer is. Meta's ad rules do not allow ads that assert or imply personal attributes such as health, age, religion or finances, so "Do you have acne?" is not allowed, while "A gentle cleanser made for acne-prone skin" describes the product instead of the person.

From a hook to a finished ad

Once you have hooks you like, you need the creative to go with them. In CamClo AI's Video Ads and Image Ads, paste a hook into Creative Direction and the ad is written and made around it, from your product photos. Make one ad per hook to run the test above.

Turn your best hooks into ads

Video Ads and Image Ads make finished ads from your product photos. Paste a hook into Creative Direction and each ad is built around it, so you can test hooks without a shoot.

Questions

What is a hook in a video ad?

The hook is the opening of the video: the first line someone hears or reads and the first thing they see. Its only job is to make the right people stop scrolling long enough to hear the rest.

How long should a hook be?

Short enough to say in one breath. Most hooks this tool writes are under 12 words. For an image ad headline, turn on the headline filter to keep hooks of 40 characters or fewer.

Does the hook generator use AI?

No. It places your words into 46 hook templates across 12 styles, right in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, and it is free to use as often as you like.

How many hooks should I test?

Three to five at a time for the same product, with the same visual, budget and audience, so the hook is the only thing that changes. Keep the winner and write the next round in its style.

Can I use these hooks on TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

Yes. The same hooks work as the first spoken line, as on-screen text in the first seconds, or as the caption's first line. For image ads, use the short ones as the headline.

Why are some hooks missing?

A hook only shows when every word it needs is filled in. The test and challenge hooks need how long it takes, and the headline filter hides hooks longer than 40 characters.
